Paxton is here!

One beautiful Monday in July we found out we were having a baby! We were so excited! That weekend, we climbed King's Peak. What better way to celebrate than summiting the highest peak in Utah?! The next few months were filled with anticipation and...SICKNESS! Pregnancy was a little rough for me, at least at first. Finally towards the endish of my second trimester it got much better. I was due April 2. As that day approached we (okay, mostly me...Wes is always patient) got more and more anxious to meet our sweet little boy. April 2 came...and went. In my ward (church congregation) there were 3 other women also due in April, all after me. One had her baby on April 2 (MY DATE) one on April 5, I was pretty sad by that point. I wanted my baby dang it! On Monday April 6 I decided I needed to do something besides sit home and be sad I didn't have my baby yet. So I went to Joann's and bought a pattern and fabric for a fun vintage dress. All day I worked on my 8 yards of fabric and 2 yards of net. SO FUN! That night I put it all in a pile and we went to bed like normal, 10:00.
11:30 rolls around and I woke up, needing to go to the bathroom, pretty typical. But before I got up I realized I felt wet...very wet. Great, I peed my pants. Eh, I'm 40 1/2 weeks pregnant...I'm allowed. But then I realized how much was wet...I woke Wes up and he was pretty soaked through too. I did a good job! MY WATER HAD BROKE! WE WERE GOING TO HAVE OUR BABY! So we pulled our stuff together and went to the hospital! We got admitted and I got all hooked up to monitors and stuff and we started waiting. Contractions really made me have to pee. So I got up several times and went to the bathroom...but we started noticing that Paxton's heart rate would drop when I did that. So no more getting up, you are confined to bed. I had been planning on a natural delivery, I would be able to get up and move around, take a bath...do whatever. But no. Stuck in bed. His heart rate continued to drop on occasion so they started pumping water back into my uterus. The cord was somehow getting squished and would cause his heart rate to drop, but with this extra fluid he would be stable. Since I wasn't dilating...like at all...they decided that I would need pitocin. This meant epidural for sure! Plus, because of the heart issue there was about a 50% chance I would need a c-section anyway. So getting an epidural was a good idea so I wouldn't have to be put out for the surgery. There was a c-section scheduled for 9ish so they didn't want to start anything on me until the OR was clear, just incase. So at about 10:30 we started the pitocin. The epidural wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. The hardest part about it was that when he put the needle in I was supposed to push back on it. That is SO not intuitive. Something poky is getting you...you go AWAY from it! But it didn't actually hurt, so we were okay. So now we were just waiting. Paxton was about a 1/2 inch from coming out this entire time. But I wasn't dilating. The problem was my cervix was posterior. So even though he was RIGHT THERE...he couldn't come out. Poor kid was just waiting on mommy. Hours passed and  slowly my cervix began to move. During this process they took the baby heart monitor off my stomach and put one on his head instead. They described it like when you're a kid and you put a needle through the top layer of skin on your finger. It doesn't hurt, but that tiny amount of skin will hold it in place. I was only dilated to a 6  at about 6:30... but with a little help from my doc we got up to a 10! Ready to go! I only had to push for about 45 minutes which was nice. although they tell you to try to NOT push sometimes... ha! Like that's even possible. Okay, it is...but really really hard to do! My epidural was a really low dose so I could still feel a lot. But MAN WAS I GRATEFUL FOR THAT EPIDURAL! He started getting distressed... come on mom, can't you just get me out yet! We could see his head but he just wasn't quite out. So one snip later and I had my beautiful baby! He actually did come out quite normal looking. not squished or wrinkely or anything. Super cute kid :-) They normally do a jaundice test at 24 hours, but our nurse noticed he looked a little yellow so they did a test early. he was quite high, but not dangerously high. So he got put on the special little lights, he looked a little like an alien man. It was really pretty cute. He HATED the sunglasses they put on him. His jaundice levels were a lot lower in the morning so he was able to come off the lights and we got to take him home! We had to take him in for 2 more tests before he was cleared of jaundice. It was quite the little adventure and we felt bad for our little guy having to get poked 4 extra times. We are just so grateful to have this little boy in our lives and in hour home. he is such a sweetie, a happy little boy and we just love him more and more every day. :-)
